It is evident that any musical experience conveys meanings related to gender, so that, from creation to perception, through interpretation, learning and teaching, all musical processes produce ideologies and transmit connotations derived from this perspective. The exploration of gender relations through music, however, did not burst into research until the 1970s, particularly in the Anglo-Saxon sphere, where a small but relevant number of specialists, generally feminist activists, introduced this novel category of study as a complement and opposition to the type of approach to music that was being carried out at that time.
