Teaching criteria used by conductors in amateur choirs for adults

The current study aims to explore teaching criteria used by conductors in amateur choirs for adults, as conductors behave as music teachers in these types of musical groups. The research method holds a qualitative, nonexperimental, and cross-sectional design, using the constant comparative method inductively. The purposive sample comprises two women conductors who have vast working experience in amateur choirs for adults from the anonymized region of Chile. Results reveal a transition from traditionalism to constructivism in at least three teaching criteria implemented in the conducting work within amateur choirs for adults: singer selection, teaching work in rehearsals, and choral groups' expectations. In conclusion, traditionalism is oriented towards musical aspects and resources management, whereas constructivism also considers attitudinal issues. Some implications are provided.
