This article discusses the advantages and disadvantages of combining two disciplines such as pedagogy and a sport. From this perspective we explore the possible relations between cognitive aspects of the disciplines and aspects referring to competition in collaborative-competitive sports. An exploratory study was performed to analyze the relationship between Field Dependent-Independent Cognitive Style, and passing and launching competence while playing soccer using a sample of secondary education students. Also included are other variables such as gender, age, knowledge, experience and attitude. The outcome found a relationship between competence and knowledge, attitudes and practice in soccer. However, no significant relationship was found between Field Dependence-Independence and competence. We suggest that these studies continue to be performed with other homogenous samples of professional groups.
