Abstract

This paper outlines a collaborative process for applying Participatory Action Research (PAR) methodology to enhance community action within the framework of social inclusion policies. Various stakeholders actively involved in leading and participating in community-oriented inclusion projects have contributed to this work.

Specifically, it describes the methodological process implemented through PAR as a research approach and highlights its various stages: negotiating and understanding the demand; forming the steering group; identifying participants; creating forums to address the defined issues; designing the work process with clearly defined phases, content, and expected outcomes; systematising practice and preparing documentation; and defining evaluation criteria. Indeed, this proposal may be applicable across various contexts and social realities beyond the specific case presented.

This methodological proposal, from a participatory perspective, is based on three key principles: co-generating knowledge; recognising the process as emergent and continuously evolving; and respecting the diversity and validity of each participant's contributions within a framework of horizontal collaboration.

Ultimately, the findings provide valuable insights and raise questions that highlight the tensions and challenges of applying this methodology to foster participatory processes and collaborative practices within the community. These insights provide opportunities to further advance the consolidation of transformative research-action projects that address local needs and generate knowledge.
