Abstract: In this paper we address the uses of irony of situation in the construction of 1920s bourgeois comedy, taking as a reference text J. M. Millàs-Raurell’s piece La llotja (1928). Our analysis starts by considering bourgeois comedy as one of the most widespread forms of theatre, with an essential referent in Carles Soldevila’s dramatic production, represented in this paper by Bola de neu (1927). We then move on to the central object of our analysis, La llotja, which can be related to Soldevila’s work in order to ascertain the extent to which the same devices can be found. As a result of this comparison, the possibility of reading Millàs-Raurell’s work in terms of hypertextual irony is explored.
Key words: J. M. Millàs-Raurell, bourgeois comedy, La llotja, irony of situation, hypertextual irony.
