Abstract

Catalan and Spanish express the focus-background (FB) partition of sentence in a very different way (Villalba, 2007, 2011, Leonetti, 2011, Planas-Morales y Villalba, 2015), particularly in interrogative sentences, where Catalan allows expresing the background as a right-dislocate, instead of resorting to deletion (recoverable by means of the resumptive clitic or the verbal agreement). Furthermore, Spanish never expresses the background by means of right-dislocation, but allows in situ realization. In this article, we present a comparative corpus study which shows that the FB partition displays microparametric differences.
