Abstract

The aim of this article is to show the difference between codified politeness and interpreted politeness related to directive speech acts. The objective is to find which linguistic mechanisms are used, as well as the communicative behavior, that is, the reactions of the hearer, in order to determine the interpretation of politeness. For this purpose, we will first briefly explain our concept of speech act and of politeness. Afterwards, we will analyze directive speech acts in different situational contexts: colloquial conversations and transactional conversations, as well as in different cultural contexts: both in Spanish and in German.
