This paper includes the analysis of the greeting formulae included in the corpus of the project Tipotext . Tipotext is a quantitative and qualitative research based on 107 non-fiction texts which exhibit different degrees of presence of the speaker and implication on the message. Focusing on three extratextual variables (type of exchange, mode of production and type of participation), the greetings have been identified and classified taking into account the genre of the text where they appear. We have concluded that choosing a greeting formula depends on the type and genre of the text, and also on variables related with the participants and their relationship. Conversely, every greeting puts forward context information about the text in which it appears.
