Abstract
The etymologically conscious recovery of p, b, t, k and g -though not necessarily of its corresponding phonemes- in the Middle and Modern ages is shared by the most relevant Western european languages. The present article focuses on the cropping up of those letters and phonemes in English in comparison to the neighbouring romance tongues, especially old French and French which is very often its most important etymological and cultural mediator.
