Abstract

The F0 is a parameter of special interest in the forensic praxis due to the fact that, among other advantages, it can be analyzed even on low quality recordings (Rose, 2002). On the other hand, Labov’s variationist approach (Labov, 1994, 2001) indicates that the variation is inherent in all languages and is produced by internal and external factors. Starting from these assumptions, we will analyze a set of controlled sentences uttered by speakers with similar sociolinguistic characteristics. We will consider the tonal configurations (F0 maximum and minimum values, mean, standard deviation, skewness and kurtosis), the tonal slopes of pitch accents and the alignment of the peaks. The results will show the usefulness of the considered variables in forensic speaker identification as well as his geographic source.

Keywords: forensic phonetics; tonal configurations; tonal peaks; tonal slopes; discriminant analysis.
