About the Journal

Focus and Scope

SPANISH JOURNAL OF PALAEONTOLOGY (SJP) is the journal of the Sociedad Española de Paleontología; formerly it was named REVISTA ESPAÑOLA DE PALEONTOLOGÍA. The journal is international and publishes original manuscripts in Spanish and, preferentially, British spelling English on all aspects of broad interest in palaeontology. Articles on new discoveries and approaches are especially welcome. Studies of present-day material can be included if they have significant palaeontological relevance. The SPANISH JOURNAL OF PALAEONTOLOGY publishes two issues per year.

SPANISH JOURNAL OF PALAEONTOLOGY publishes different types of manuscripts:

  • Standard articles: These are original research papers on any aspect of palaeontology, with no strict length requirements.

  • Short communications: They are articles of no more than four printed pages, on topics of special significance/relevance; this type of article is promptly reviewed for publication.

  • Special papers: These articles are to be included in special issues of the journal or particular thematic collections of articles; they may report the outcome of scientific meetings.

  • Invited papers: Solicited by the Editorial Board for significant, innovative, and provocative discoveries, as well as for researchers of worldwide prestige.

  • Comments: These are short articles, less than two printed pages, commenting on analysis of previously published papers, or offering reply and discussion.

  • Book reviews: They consist of in-depth reviews of recent books covering the wide-ranging interests of the palaeontological community, and can run from one to three printed pages.

Submissions to the SPANISH JOURNAL OF PALAEONTOLOGY must not have been published previously, or simultaneously submitted elsewhere. All co-authors should read and approve the submitted manuscript, and are responsible for the accuracy of the text as presented.

Peer Review Process

All submitted papers will be peer-reviewed by two internationally well-known and reputed scientists. They will evaluate the scientific quality of the manuscripts. The Editorial Board can look for specialists of the different topics according to the submissions. However, it is very useful that authors suggest potential reviewers when submitting their papers.

Journal History

The Sociedad Española de Paleontología (SEP) published the first issue of Revista Española de Paleontología in 1986. In 2012, after a renewal of the Editorial Committee, the journal changed to Spanish Journal of Palaeontology as a new compromise of internationalization of the journal.

Since the very beginning, the journal published two issues per year. In addition, several extra volumes were published in the past.
