Abstract

This essay examines Andy Warhol’s relationship to the AIDS crisis, specifically its consequences on his work. In doing so, it considers, through a single individual, the singularity of being face-to-face with catastrophe, which prevented many things, and provoked others.

Author Biography

Thibault Boulvain, Assistant Professor en histoire de l'art à Sciences Po.

Thibault Boulvain est Assistant Professor en histoire de l'art à Sciences Po. Il a soutenu en 2017, à l’université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, une thèse sur les représentations visuelles de la séropositivité et du sida, en Europe et aux Etats-Unis, entre 1981 et 1997. L’ouvrage qui en est issu,  L’art en sida. 1981-1997 , a paru en juin 2021 aux Presses du réel (collection « Œuvres en sociétés »). Tout en poursuivant ses recherches sur cette question, et plus largement sur les représentations visuelles de la maladie dans l’histoire, Thibault Boulvain explore actuellement un nouveau terrain de recherche : « ‘‘L’effet-Méditerranée’’ dans les arts visuels des années 1950 à nos jours ». Il s’agit d’étudier, sur ce temps long, la nature, les manifestations, les significations et les fonctions du rapport des artistes à la Méditerranée. Cette recherche interdisciplinaire fait agir et penser ensemble des modes de créations artistiques différents, pris dans une circulation internationale. Au Musée national d’art moderne-Centre Georges Pompidou, Thibault Boulvain est également membre du comité de pilotage du projet « Section Sexualités » (Musée national d’art moderne-Centre Georges Pompidou/École Universitaire de Recherche ArTeC- Université Paris 8/Université Paris Lumières).
