Abstract

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has huge health, social and economic impacts. Current therapies can control the infection but a true cure or effective vaccine has yet to be found. To achieve these objectives, one must take into consideration the great genetic variability and rapid evolution of HIV. These special characteristics can be associated, for example, with antigenic changes and the emergence of drug-resistant variants.
