Abstract

This article analyzes the magical aspect of Testamento de Celestina, a burlesque poem composed by the blind poet Cristóbal Bravo and published in 1597 as a single sheet of paper. This text imitates the pattern of a will as a legal document and parodies it. Celestina, in her deathbed, leaves her witch’s laboratory to those women who will follow her steps and gives them illustrative advices about magic and ars amandi. The Testament is a compilation of popular knowledge and oral traditions about sorcery, which are approached from a humoristic point of view. It is a unique testimony of female magic in Hispanic literature.
