Sicily in Ancient times. The emergence of a myth

Abstract

The location of Sicily, in the middle of the Mediterranian Sea, has made of it a crossing and a meeting point since the very old times. The presence of many populations belonging to different ethnic and linguistic groups has been dated since very early in History. Every inhabitant has contributed to shape the Sicilians’s personality and every one of them has provided something to the mythical image of the island. This paper will collect some of these first meetings to determine how Sicily has been considered a unique place since the historical times.

Author Biography

Berta Gonzalez Saavedra

Berta González es doctora en Filología clásica por la UCM y licenciada en Filología Italiana por la UV. Su tesis doctoral, defendida en 2015, se titula “Expresión de la Procedencia en lenguas indoeuropeas antiguas: griego, latín e hitita”. Ha trabajado como contratada de investigación en la Università Cattolica de Milán, en el proyecto Index Thomisticus Treebank, con el investigador Marco C. Passarotti en la anotación semántico-pragmática de textos latinos. Tras haber obtenido una beca postdoctoral Juan de la Cierva formación en el área de Filología Latina en la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid y haber sido profesora ayudante doctora en ese departamento, actualemente es profesora ayudante doctora en el área de Lingüística Indoeuropea de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid y es colaboradora de los proyectos REGLA (Rección y Complementación en Griego Antiguo y Latín) y Relaciones lingüísticas y culturales entre Irán y el mundo clásico durante el período del Imperio parto). Sus principales líneas de investigación son la lingüística indoeuropea y la latina en particular y la revisión de la figura femenina en la literatura clásica.
