Visions and representations of the Paris Chinatown district in extremely contemporary French films: from exoticism to multiculturalism

Abstract
The present research studies the representations of triangle de Choisy, the district known as Chinatown of Paris, in three contemporary French movies: Augustin, roi du Kung-fu (1999), Paris, je t’aime (2006) et Made in China (2019). The research objective is to figure out the perception that the mainstream French society holds towards this urban enclave and the Sino-French subculture, which can be observed through these movies. By analyzing the images of the landscape of the district, the Occidental male characters who hang around in the district and Asian female dwellers of the district, the article presents three aspects of the cinematographic representations of Parisian Chinatown: its architecture postmodernity, its function in the social organization of Paris and its relationship with the mainstream society. The article argues that Parisian Chinatown represents the multicultural side of Paris on the screen, so that the Chinatown images provide a perspective on the evolution of the multiculturalism idea in French society.
