Abstract

In this paper, Alberto Elena elaborates a general overview of the fascination caused in cinema by the city of Tangiers. It has been a basic and mythical fascination since it inspired the movieCasablanca (Michael Curtiz, 1942), in spite of the fact that the reference to the city was finally removed from the film because of political reasons. The different cinematic images of Tangiers –especially numerous in the period when Tangiers was an International Zone (1923-1956)– all concur in giving the city an air of impenetrable mystery. It was in those years when the myth of Tangiers took shape, a myth which nourished both International and Spanish cinemas. The echoes of such myth survive nowadays, combined with new filmic discourses about the city showing their concern about social issues, “illegal” immigration among them.
