Abstract

In order to determine lexical-semantic changes in Mexico City Spanish, a panel study was conducted with 19 individuals interviewed in the year 2022. These individuals are part of the original PRESEEA - Mexico City corpus, collected between 1997 and 2006. The average time gap between the original and current interviews is approximately 20 years. An analysis of lexicographically-marked vocabulary was conducted. The explored marks included: popular, vulgar, cultured tradition, and loans. Words marked with these characteristics were searched within the interview texts. Nule-hypothesis testing and correspondence analysis were carried out to examine the dependency between the explored lexical categories and sociolinguistic variables such as age, gender, and education level. The results confirm variable phenomena such as age grading, individual change, sociolinguistic leveling, and a shift in attitude towards certain lexical categories.
