Abstract
Developing countries like Mexico, have developed a number of science and technology plans in order to encourage research activities, thus being able to better compete in an increasingly globalized world. Evaluation policies have also been addressed to make a more rational use of available resources and to assess the performance of both actors and institutions, according to accountability principles. Even though evaluation policies achieved significant increases in quality, they have also brought about unexpected effects, like individualism and deficient teaching by strenghtening excesive productivity in research. Social sciences seem to be at risk of losing financial support due to the fact that for some administrators and policy makers social disciplines are “unattractive” for the market. However Social Sciences are crucial in understanding and solving the enormous problems that today’s world is facing.
